Campbell-Devon Building and North Town Recreation Building
2501-2505 and 2519-2529 W Devon Ave. Chicago, IL 60659
The Campbell-Devon and North Town Recreation Buildings were originally part of one cohesive block built by Oldefest & Williams between 1928 and 1929. Like the North Town State Bank Building (Site 12), the block was built in the Baroque-Revival style and highly ornate. The two remaining structures are still mostly intact above the first floor and contain decorative terra cotta reliefs and details, characteristic of Oldefest & Williams, manufactured by the American Terra Cotta Co. Oldefest & Williams were not the only architects along Devon to employ the terra cotta manufacturer and much of the terra cotta seen along the street was a product of the company.
The original block was mostly retail storefronts with offices above. The North Town Recreation Building once held a 2nd -floor bowling alley, which used to be quite common throughout the city. The missing structure was known as the North Town Mart Building and had a department store on the main level and a religious space on the second.
